I have a lot of respect for Jones, having seen him close-up for years. He took me along with him on two inspection tours of Afghanistan, back when he was the Supreme Allied Commander, and I always had the sense that Jones was keenly aware that the problems in Afghanistan were deeper and more intractable than he could ever acknowledge publically, while he was still one of the commanders ostensibly responsible for the war’s success.

Advice to Jay Leno who is performing at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner Saturday night: The bad news is, if the dinner stays on schedule, you will get on just about 10 o’clock, which I understand is not a great time for you. On the other hand, the good news is you’ll be on C-Span, which these days, is running well ahead of CNN in the ratings.
