I agree we can never be good enough. It is the effort that counts. We should also not forget the law of diminishing returns that when we are pretty good the effort it takes to become better gets to be awfully high for a small improvement.
When I think about how US leadership fumbled the ball on oil and coal reserves I am stunned by how far they were from the mark about where they had to worry about diminishing returns. I was reading the newspapers and magazines that no other 12 13 or 14 boy in the country was reading.
I remeber what was being said then and then how the story changed in the 80s and 90s.
Such misconduct makes me want to committ an act of arson.

I did not see your full comment on the home page where recent comments were listed.
So I surfed here to write what I thought would be some counter comments.
Then when I red your full comment I changed my mind. Your statement that when we go to war our religions go with us is actually a very profound and true statement. It is to bad that the God of some people is money and the God of other people is power and so on even though they may not recognize it. I wonder could even placing a very high value on loyalty to your friends, your subordiantes, your supiriors, or your country or upholding the Constitution of the United Kingdom (States) ever be an evil thing? Well what about even placing loyalty, to GOD herself as she has represented herself through the Bible or the Koran, could that be a bad thing? Well I guess if someone is still dealing with loyalty to money or even to their family as the most important value they are not ready to ask these very hypothetical decisions.

What is that word that keeps popping up Fascist. We live in a country where the minority rules and the rest follow because we are so afraid to offend somebody elses morals. Remember what change the last Fascist brought about because he appealed to the change people wanted. He disarmed the citizens first, passed all kinds of feelgood laws and wa-la here we are in 21 century in the good old US of A. Talking about this crap on a milatary blog. Whats it all coming to uh.
