In the Skies, Terror in Disguise?

In the Skies, Terror in Disguise?

One of the first things I witnessed the day after September 11, 2001 was a rush to implement a rash of new security enhancements that did little or nothing to enhance security.  What they did instead was make it significantly more difficult for average Americans go about their normal pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness.

Now we find ourselves are confronted with a systemic failure of our security net to catch a wannabe plane bomber, and instead of correcting the embarrassingly obvious lapses, the response is a hysterical (and I don’t mean funny) list of indignities inflicted on the flying public, all of dubious value.

Passengers on many flights were banned from opening overhead bins, or going to the bathroom during the last hour of the flight, according to the AP. Some were told they couldn’t listen to iPods, or even write Christmas cards.   On one transatlantic flight the in-flight entertainment system was turned off, presumably so the channel that tracks the plane’s location would not be seen by would-be terrorists.  On another flight passengers were required to move blankets from their laps so that their hands would be visible during the final hour. “I can’t see what kind of difference that would make. If it’s an eight hour flight they could still have seven hours to blow up the plane if that’s what they want to do,” one passenger told the AP.   Good point.  Maybe he should work for the TSA.

Let’s review what actually went wrong here. On Christmas Day, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian whose father had warned the U.S. embassy that he was becoming “radicalized,” and who had recently spent time in Yemen, was able put an explosive device in his underwear and board a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.  The bomb, estimated to be powerful enough to blow a hole in the plane, apparently failed to work as designed, allowing aggressive action by other passengers to avert disaster.

Homeland Security Chief Janet Nepolitano initially said, “the system worked,” before “revising and extending” her remarks.   Now all the talk is about employing “full body scan” x-ray devices which produce a anatomically accurate image of your naked body before you can board a plane.  (I’ve never spent much time on a nude beach, but I am told after a short period of adjustment the curiosity factor fades, so maybe when this becomes SOP, we’ll all be used to having to bare all to strangers.   Heck, maybe some enterprising airline will offer nude flights, for which passengers will be rewarded with the luxury of being able to eat, listen to music, watch the in-flight entertainment system, and answer the call of nature.)

But seriously, here was a man who should have been on the terrorist watch list, who bought his one-way ticket for cash, and had no luggage, but yet apparently did not get any extra attention upon departing Amsterdam.   Hello???  And the response is to force of passengers squirm in their seats with no access to bathroom facilities while banning their iPods?  Not to mention the prospect of digital strip searches.

Thank goodness the plot to blow up the plane failed.  But when terrorists can provoke hapless bureaucrats to invoke senseless security rules that offer dubious protection while inflicting maximum distress on the traveling public, the terrorists win.

How about some common sense?  And accountability?

Well said. It is incredible that this guy was not subject to greater scrutiny, while the absurd rules you describe continue and thousands of people who pose no threat–including me–are subject to special attention because we share the name of someone who is on the list, probably wrongly. The levels of failure and stupidity keep increasing on this story. It should be a wake up call for real changes in how the government uses its intelligence, but instead they will attack the problem on the back end–and ineptly at that.

Not to worry. President BHO has launched a full and comprehensive investigation of this event. I am sure that this will send the terrorists back into hiding. We have nothing to fear except fear itself. Those poor terrorists do not know who they are messing with. BHO os going to get this stuff straightened out once and for all.

“bought his one-way ticket for cash, and had no luggage, but yet apparently did not get any extra attention upon departing Amsterdam.”

Sounds like a drug courier if nothing else.

Janet Nepolitano has no busness whatsoever being HSC.Get this idiot out of here.

Become an European shopper from Iceland…that always worked well.

When are we going to take a long-ignored lesson from the Israelis? No airline terrorist incidents in 30 years — - — wake up America. Our high-tech mind set blinds us to their long-proven effective way of ferreting out these zealots. Our robotics will never outsmart a terrorist mind eager to sacrifice his life for however many virgins.

forgive my ignorance, but what strategy have the israelis implowered that has had such great success and why do we not currently utilize that same strategy domesticaly

As a Veteran the DHS has me on a “Watch List” because of the threat of me becoming a “Right-Wing Extremist”. The head of a Major Bank in Kenya goes to the Embassy and says-“Hey, my son has become a Radical Islamist and has been going to Yemen. DHS-“No Worries-He’s Cool. They couldn’t find an Illegal Immigrant on a Construction Site.

I strongly feel that anyone who makes the Homeland Security list should be DENIED total travel in the USA and forfeit their rights! Get off our ships! Get off our planes! Get off our land! Why wait until they act out? The question is NOT if they will act out but, WHEN and to what extend will our citizens and Country be in jeopardy? Anyone who willingly associates with these psychopaths does it of their own free will and should answer for it! BLACKLIST them. Period. End. No waiting! Anyone who gets on that list should have NO RIGHTS! The time of “wait and see” is over and done with now is time for ACTION! We were lucky this time….

What we all need to do is stop the bellyaching, finger pointing and shoulda, couldas. What do YOU suggest our government do to insure the safety of Americans or rather all innocent people When we can all honestly say: We had a problem and WE came up with a solution of which was not implemented… then we can point and shout. Lets put our money where our angry spewing comes forth and offer viable solutions to OUR problem. President Obama, as the head of our great nation, is attempting to address this issue but it isn’t only his problem… it is OUR problem… and YOUR suggestion is? My solution… NUKE em! We played it our way now lets play it their way! It is time to take off our PC kid gloves and cream this suckers!

I completely agree. I mean this guy seriously should have been picked off by the TSA. I mean this guy who was a bright neon sign got through no problem, yet when my husband was going back to Iraq from R&R IN HIS UNIFORM, they make him take off everything and go through all of his stuff, pat him, the whole shuh-bang. Ridiculous. I really hope that a better system is put into effect. Otherwise, I am seriously going to consider getting a loan to start that nude airline.

and ALL the rest of the idiots in governmental positions they were put there for political reasons, NOT because they were qualified to be there!

I would expect no less from the morons in DC.

There are many other security issues that can be learned from the Israelis, like when Ben Ladin left Afghanistan and when Saddam should have been taken out, like after the Gulf War. America needs to know their enemies and not to quit too soon — finish a war and the enemy.

Why don’t you look at El Al’s boarding policies. Even 40 years ago they were checking toothpaste containers and as the previous writer said “look at their record”. Sp. “implowered” = employed and domestically sp “domesticaly”.

Israeli intelligence is something that could be copied from the Israelis.

Yeah, we need a blacklist; it worked so well with McCarthy. Take away everyone’s rights who may be placed on the Homeland Security list by mistake. While you’re at it, why not take away everyone’s rights? Forbidding travel outside the home would perhaps satisfy you. Benjamin Franklin stated that those who give up essential rights for temporary security deserve neither — he was correct. Turining this country into some sort of neoSoviet Union would mean that the terrorists won. Is that what you want? Perhaps you’ll make the list yourself?

Is that first thing after the health reform is passed?

If you do the research, we have less rights than most other civilized nations. Mostly because the liberal left is screaming the loudest. Why they call them selves “liberal” I am sure I will never understand. I have never known a group this narrow minded and totally shut off from reality in my life. I have traveled and lived all over the world, what is happening to this country is an abomination.

The TSA and homeland security as it stands now make Mike Brown look good as the FEMA chief. We need a no nonsense MAN to take the reigns and drive home the fact that if you dare to try you will be caught, get rid of the lazy, inept line workers. Replacement of welfare recipients as security is key, trained professionals are needed. Politically correct employees aren’t cutting it, or they are cutting it if you mean cutting the safety of airline passengers.

The only real way to take our great nation out of this problem is to quit getting involved in issues in the middle east. Really. Who cares if this group blows up that group? The government needs to realize that it is entirely too long of a time coming for the United States to become free of the oil dependency that keeps us involved in middle eastern affairs. We no longer need to be the peacekeeper of the world. As a veteran of our great military, I support our troops but do not support the government position on this issue. They have been fighting in the middle east for the last 15000 years and will continue to do so. Bring our troops home, quit involving ourselves in their strife, and let them destroy themselves. That is the only answer.

Very funny. This is something that will still be a persistent problem 10 years from now. Just wait until they implement the full body cavity searches for each passenger. Boy won’t that be fun. LOL

To Becky,
I witnessed the “greatest embarassment” of our security system at one airport…An American Soldier (in uniform) being screened by a woman wearing a Muslim headdress.

Everyone is always complaining about the rights we have in this country. I think we have it pretty good. You can protest here all you want. You can yell from the mountain top all you want. Try that in Iran or Afghanistan. You would disappear. You are an American. You can complain all you want. There is one truth that you don’t seem to address however. If you do not like the way things are here in the greatest country in the world, you are always free to leave and pursue your happiness elsewhere. That is also your right. Quit complaining and do something that will help make this country a better place.

Not to give props to the TSA but — Did anyone else not notice that the TSA doesn’t work for the Netherlands? Nor IN the Netherlands? So how should the be accountable for something that occurred there? Granted, the no-fly list was something he should have been on. Also — I believe the ‘well dressed man in an expensive suit’ who got this underpants terrorist ( dressed rather scrubby) on the plane WITHOUT a PASSPORT should be found immediately. But then again, this could all be just another false flag op.

If we singled this poor(rich) terrorist out. The ACLU (and our lets accept that its our fault liberals) would have a hissy fit and start sueing every one involved for steriotyping and violating this guys rights. I have seen some photos from one of these machines, They do photos a lot better than that.

We should follow the Israeli example and train our citizens to take responsibility for their own lives. Jump up amass and permanently disable the terrorist on the spot. On the first one they had box cutters. I can’t imagine that one hundred American passengers could not overpower half dozen idiots with mail room weapons.

Who are the bigger morons? The ones who are able to convince someone they should be in DC making a difference or those who are dumb enough to send them there knowing full well that they will make no difference.
