The Last War

Given the renewed discussion of Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s now public counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan, I am bring back this video I produced a few months ago pointing out the lessons learned from the Soviet defeat in the 1980s.

Insurgency is a contest where the logistics of both sides are relatively immune to attack. In Vietnam and the Soviet-Afghan wars, the logistics of both sides were invulnerable. We supplied the Afghans with all they needed to fight the Soviets.

Where are the logistics of the Taliban/Al Quaida coming from? Can we interdict it? That is the key question. An insurgency without ammunition is called a failure.
